I decided to write one final blog post to wrap this up. I stopped posting regularly to my blog about a month ago and have spent that time on my final project and presentation. I have included some pictures of my magazine here. I also included a link to my presentation. docs.google.com/presentation/d/1iSMhImkBtuZvSCrYdIdJd1c_ygx7kkdiCdA1uVWhTJ0/edit#slide=id.p

As I mentioned last week, this week is also a short week. I had wanted to finish my third page by today, but unfortunately I didn’t get to that point. I’m close enough to be able to finish it in maybe two days next week. I’m not as far into my project as I’d hoped to be at this point, but I’m still making a lot of progress each week. I will likely be adjusting my timeline and plan next week to better accommodate myself.
This week and next, I have shorter school weeks and therefore don’t have as much time to work on my project. My original goal was to complete the second and third pages in the next two weeks. At the beginning of the week, the second page was almost done so luckily I was able to finish that today. Now I can dedicate my few days next week to the third page.
Again this week I spent my time working on my magazine pages. I have officially completed the first page and started a second one. I haven’t decided for certain the order of the pages, so I’m not creating them in any specific order either. Like I’ve mentioned previously, I don’t want to include any pictures of the project until it’s fully completed in a couple months, so for now I don’t have many updates. I expect these posts to be short and simple for the future weeks, but I will note any important updates or changes in my plan if they come up.
This week I finalized the planning stage of my project. I even started to work on the first page of my magazine. I now have almost all of the materials I will need to complete my project. I also have every page planned out. Some pages that require a lot of visual aspects, I have sketched rough drafts of. Other, simpler pages, I have just jotted down notes for how I’d like it to turn out. I have 8 weeks left until the start of May, so I have decided to spend each week completing 1 page of my magazine. My blog posts until then will just consist of quick updates on my progress and an overview of how my project is going or any possible changes made to my plan.
I spent this week further planning my magazine for the final project. I completed some (very) rough sketch ideas for a few of the pages. I hoped to have more pages planned out, but I didn’t have the time to accomplish that. I plan on doing some more sketches over break though. I also made a list of some of the supplies I will need in order to create my magazine. I will buy anything I don’t already have sometime next week. This way I will be fully prepared and able to get started on my magazine at the beginning of March. That gives me plenty of time to complete the full magazine and still be able to put in all the effort I’d like to without rushing the process. I will also be taking process pictures throughout the creation of the magazine, but I don’t want to include them in my posts until I’m fully done nor do I want to give away anything quite yet. All the process pictures will be shared when I upload pictures of the final product, likely sometime in early May.
I spent the last few days on further planning for my project. I did mostly dedicate this week to updating my website though. I spent time finding pictures that I can use for both the website and final project. I also began sketching ideas for my magazine. I only had the opportunity to sketch a few of my ideas, but I hope to spend next week continuing the sketches now that I have more time to focus on that. My website is officially up to date and now I can’t wait to get started on my magazine. I've included a picture of my rough planning sketches with this post. Hopefully I will have more ideas to show next week.
This week I decided to cut back on my research and spent time planning out how I want my final project to look. I decided to go with a creative idea, as my whole reasoning for researching fashion is because it’s a creative outlet. I plan to make a magazine with a variety of information based on my overall topic. Some brainstorming I did included: informative articles on ethical and sustainable fashion (based off research I’ve done and blog posts I’ve written in past weeks), photo collages of my personal fashion journey, tips and tricks on how to incorporate ethical fashion into your wardrobe, short instructional pages on how to create unique fashion using second-hand clothing, etc. I don’t have much to share yet, since I just have some basic ideas in mind, but I hope to begin some sketching and drafting next week. I believe I’ve done a solid amount of research and can’t wait to apply it all to my overall project with my own creative twists.
Considering I’ve spent so much time discussing fashion and clothing, I want to explain the importance that fashion has in many people’s lives. Personally I used my style as a way to grow into a more confident, creative, and outgoing person. I feel as though many people could agree with this statement. Your clothing and accessories are also a form of art used to express yourself. Sure, not everyone can draw or paint, but anyone can buy some clothes and put together an outfit they love. Wearing a unique outfit that you love can make you feel like a whole new person. This relates back to why microtrends are a negative part of fashion though. People just follow these trends rather than wearing what they want to wear. It kills the creativity of personal style. Consumers no longer get the opportunities to explore their style when the trends they see around them are constantly changing. Putting an end to microtrends could bring back unique clothing.
This week I focused on more of the stylistic aspect of sustainable fashion. Of course it’s going to be harder to find trendy pieces or clothes that match your personal style when you’re shopping at thrift stores. A good majority of the time you probably won’t like much that you find. A solution to this problem is upcycling these items that you considered to be “ugly.” There are some super simple ways to change items, such as dying them with fabric dye or cropping them/cutting them to your liking. I’ve personally done both of these things on many occasions and am always satisfied with results. They don’t require much effort, but they can completely transform an article of clothing. There are also some more complicated ways to upcycle clothes that involve sewing. You can do pretty much anything with the clothes if you know how to sew. I actually decided recently that I’m going to teach myself how to sew with an old sewing machine I found at home. I know how to do some simple things by hand-sewing with a needle and thread, but I’d like to expand my knowledge and gain the ability to do much more. The concept of upcycling is so great. It saves clothes from going to waste, allows creativity, and gives you your own unique article of clothing!
